Vice Admiral DK Joshi Will be the Next Navy Chief

Born on July 04, 1954 Vice Admiral Joshi was commissioned on April 01, 1974 in the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy.

During his long and distinguished Service spanning nearly 38 years, he has served in a variety of Command, Staff and Instructional appointments. Vice Admiral Joshi`s Sea Command includes Guided Missile Corvette Kuthar, Guided Missile destroyer Ranvir and the Aircraft Carrier Viraat. Before taking over as FOC-in-C Western Naval Command, he has served as the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, Commander- in-Chief of A&N Command (CINCAN) and the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC).

Vice Admiral Joshi is a distinguished graduate of the Naval War College, USA, an alumnus of the College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai and the prestigious National Defence College, New Delhi. He was Defence Advisor in the Indian High Commission at Singapore from 1996 to 1999.

Vice Admiral Joshi has been decorated with ParamVishistSeva Medal (PVSM), AtiVishistSeva Medal (AVSM), YudhSeva Medal (YSM), NauSena Medal (NM) and VishistSeva Medal (VSM). He is one of the Honorary ADCs of the Supreme Commander.

He is married to Mrs. Chitra Joshi and the couple have two daughters.

India: Lt General VK Singh will be the next Army Chief

Lt General VK Singh was commissioned into the Rajput Regiment on June 14, 1970. During his long and distinguished career spanning nearly 40 years, he has serviced in a variety of Command, Staff and Instructional appointments. He participated in the 1971 operations and IPKF operations. He is presently serving as the Eastern Army Commander. Prior to that, he commanded a Corps in the Western sector.

Besides being an ‘Honours Graduate’ of the US Army Infantry School, Georgia, USA, Lt Gen Singh studied at the Defence Services Staff College, the Army War College and the US Army War College, Carlisle.

He is recipient of PVSM, AVSM and YSM awards. He is also one of the Honorary ADCs of the President of India.

Lt General Singh is married to Mrs Bharati and the couple has two daughters. The elder daughter is married to an Army Officer while the younger one is working in the corporate sector.

India: National Bravery Awards for Children – 2009

The coveted Bharat Award will be given to 13 year old Master Gaurav Singh Saini of Haryana who saved approximately 50-60 people in a stampede at the Naina Devi temple. Master Karan Nishad of Uttar Pradesh has been selected for the Sanjay Chopra Award. This 11 year old boy saved five persons from drowning. The prestigious Geeta Chopra Award will be conferred on 10 year old Km. Maibam Prity Devi of Manipur who saved several lives when miscreants hurled a grenade inside their shop at Mayang Imphal Bazar.Late Km. Ranu Mishra (10 years) of Uttar Pradesh will get the Bapu Gaidhani Award posthumously for displaying exemplary courage in saving her brother and his friend from drowning. Ultimately, she sacrificed her life for her determined effort. Master Vijith V. (16 years) of Kerala and Master Narendrasinh Natvarsinh Solanki (17 ½ years) of Gujarat will also get Bapu Gaidhani Awards for their acts of bravery. Vijith saved four children from drowning in river Kallada while Narendrasinh saved his father from the clutches of a crocodile in Dhadhar river.

Along with courageous acts there are instances of bold decisions and revolts against prevailing social-evil. The three girl childs from West Bengal — Km. Rekha Kalindi (11 years), Km. Sunita Mahato (11 years 4 months) and Km. Afsana Khatun (12 years 5 months) refused to get married at early age and wanted to continue their studies. Ultimately, parents of these brave hearts gave in and the girls were allowed to continue their studies.

The other recipients are : Master Uddesh R. Ramnathkar (Goa), Master Dijekshon Syiem, Km. Thoi Thoi Khumanthem (Manipur), Master Zonunsanga, Master Lalrammawia (both from Mizoram), Master Sujith R., Master Amal Antony, Km. Krishnapriya K., Master Sujith Kumar P.(all from Kerala), Late Master Dijekshon Syiem (Meghalaya), Km. Vaishaliben Sambhubhai Solanki (Gujarat) and Master Yogesh Kumar Jangid (Rajasthan).

The children will participate in the Republic Day parade at Rajpath.

2. Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards are given to a person for meritorious act of humane nature in saving the life of a person. The award is given in three categories, namely, Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak, and Jeevan Raksha Padak. Persons of either sex in all walks of life are eligible for these awards. The award can also be conferred posthumously.

3. The decoration of the award (medal, certificate signed by the Home Minister and demand draft for lump sum monetary allowance) is presented to the awardee in due course by the respective Government of the State to which the awardee belongs. The lump sum monetary allowance is given at the rate of Rs.75,000, Rs.45,000 and Rs.30,000 to the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak and Jeevan Raksha Padak awardee respectively.

President interacts with children

The President, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, met more than 450 children from various Schools of Delhi and surrounding areas on the occasion of Children’s Day at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi today. The children represented the age group 5-18 years.

Dr Kalam impressed upon the children the need to acquire knowledge to make progress in their careers. The President told the assembled children that they should contribute to the development of the nation by using their spare time on Saturdays and Sundays to teach people in rural areas who cannot read or write. Similarly, the children should utilize their spare time to plant saplings in their School campus as well as in their surroundings. Dr Kalam spoke about the country’s vision to become a develop nation by the year 2020. The President said a developed India would be a nation with economic prosperity, and a good value system.

Earlier, the President met writers of children’s literature at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The President said, children’s hopes and aspirations should be reflected in the writings of children’s literature. If the children’s hopes and aspirations are reflected in the writings, children will be benefited. The writers explained to the President that many of the stories written by them find a place in the School primary and secondary syllabi. The writers said that the Government should popularize children’s literature and felt that a National Children’s University should be established in the country. The writers also explained some of the problems, which they face in their work, to the President.
