Thomas Cook’s Travel Services through Post Offices

All travel related services will now be available under one roof to the people of Delhi. Delhi Postal Circle Signed here today a MoU with Thomas Cook (India) Ltd., a company engaged in the business of organizing travel arrangements, to provide all travel related services through Select Post Offices. The MoU was signed by Chief Post Master General, Delhi, Shri Gopinath and Managing Director of Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. Shri Madhavan Menon. Dedicating the five Travel and Foreign Exchange Bureaux to the people of Delhi, the Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology Shri A.Raja said that the launch of these services in Post Offices is a path-breaking initiative taken by Delhi Circle. The Minister said, this enterprise brings together the strengths of India Post, the largest postal network in the world and Thomas Cook, one of the most recognized and internationally known Companies in the travel and foreign exchange sector, the world over. This would be a meaningful value- addition to the portfolio of services offered by the Department of Post as it is based on the perception and recognition of a felt need for provision of this kind of service. On the other hand, it would enable Thomas Cook to widen their reach by leveraging the India Post network, the Minister added.

In the first phase, five dedicated post offices for these services are Connaught Place’ A’ Block, Karol Bagh Post Office, Greater Kailash Part-II Post Office, Chanakya Puri Post Office and Vasant Vihar Post Office. The services to be provided by Thomas Cook at these Post Offices include: Sale & Purchase of Foreign Exchange in all major currencies, Travelers’ Cheques, Foreign Currency Drafts, Wire Transfers, Cash advances against International Credit Cards, Leisure travel packages for both inbound and outbound travel, Travel Insurance, VISA, Passport service and Domestic and International Air Tickets.

The era of globalization and liberalization has brought about extensive travel opportunities requiring an integrated travel and forex solution. Delhi being one of the most prominent commercial and tourist hubs of the country is particularly well-suited for the launch of this service. With the Commonwealth games being hosted by Delhi in October this year, a huge influx of tourists from all parts of the world is expected and this tie up will cater to the needs of the floating population in a befitting manner.

Congratulating the Chief Postmaster General Delhi Circle and his team for putting together this collaboration and Thomas Cook India Ltd for recognizing the tremendous potential therein, the Minister said that if the model worked out by Delhi Circle as parts of this venture succeed then the same can perhaps be rolled out in other parts of the country. Rail Yatri Niwas Renovated

Shri K.C.Jena, Chairman, Railway Board and ex-officio Principal Secretary to the Government of India inaugurated the renovated New Delhi Rail Yatri Niwas, India’s first Ginger Rail Yatri Niwas here today. The renovated Rail Yatri Niwas developed by Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) and the Roots Corporation Limited (RCL), stands tall sparkling new at the Ajmeri Gate side of the New Delhi Railway Station in new earthly hues and shiny warm reds. This hotel was originally built in 1988 as part of Indian Railways efforts to offer hotel rooms to the railway passengers at reasonable prices.

The property was taken over by IRCTC in April, 2005 with a mandate to upgrade it on PPP basis. Keeping its ultimate objective of world class service at affordable prices in view, IRCTC allotted the task of renovating and operating the hotel on PPP basis, for 15 years, on open tender basis. This task was taken up by M/s Roots Corporation Limited, a 100% subsidiary of The Indian Hotels Company Limited.

The hotel was stripped to its bare shell and renovated in a period of 9 months with an investment of about Rs. 10.5 crores to offer the customers 109 SMART BASICS rooms and a plethora of additional facilities. A guest at the hotel now has a choice of well fitted orange and blue theme rooms with LCD TVs, posturepedic mattresses, anti allergy pillows, tropical duvets, Smart Bev Tea Coffee Maker, complimentary bottles of water and an access card to enter the room.The hotel also offers a gymnasium and a meeting room for the convenience of its guests.

Buddhist Circuit train launched

Smt. Ambika Soni, Union Minister of Tourism & Culture, Shri Chandan Mitra, Member of Parliament, Shri Ashok Ahuja, MLA, Delhi, Shri K. C. Jena, Chairman, Railway Board and senior officers of Ministry of Railways and IRCTC were among those present on the occasion. The train has been introduced by Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways. Shri Lalu Prasad said that this special train has been introduced for the Buddhist pilgrimage from India and abroad particularly from the South Asian countries to promote tourism. The train will take passengers to important destinations linked to the life of Buddha such as Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Nalandha, Kushinagar, Lumbini, Sravasti. He said that the package includes train travel, road travel, all meals, deluxe hotel facilities, sight seeing, monument entry fees, security, insurance and guide services. The Minister informed that the travel related information for this train has been prepared in Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Thai languages for the convenience of international travellers. The Minister pointed out that IRCTC is already running a “Bharat Darshan” train with a nominal fare of Rs.500 per day. More useful tour packages will be introduced for the benefit of the tourists, he added. He thanked the Ministry of Tourism for their cooperation in the project.

Speaking on the occasion, Smt. Ambika Soni, said that Railways in recent times have made tremendous progress and earned huge surplus. She pointed out that several passenger amenities introduced by Railways are helping in the promotion of tourism in a big way. She said that her department will continue to collaborate with Railways in the tourist sector.

The train covers the whole journey in eight days. The passengers will be taken to Gaya, Rajgir-Nalanda, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Lumbani in Nepal, Gonda, Agra and back to Delhi. The fare from October 2007 to March 2008 will be US$ 150, 105 and 88 for 1st AC, 2nd AC and 3rd AC respectively per person per night on twin sharing basis. In other words, the total individual fair for seven days will be US$ 1050, 735 and 616 respectively.

Tariff includes all the comforts of Rajdhani Express Air Conditioned train, which includes train journey, onboard/off board catering, house keeping, road transfer by AC vehicles, sightseeing, Darshan, visit to holy places, hotel stay in AC rooms and entrance fee at monuments. Indian passengers can pay in equivalent Rupee (INR) amount, at the exchange rate prevalent at the time of payment.
