PM expresses condolence on passing away of Baba Amte

“It is with a deep sense of grief and loss that I heard about the demise of Baba Amte. A true Gandhian who worked hard to uphold Gandhian values in their true spirit, Baba Amte became a legend in his own lifetime. The work he did for the upliftment of leprosy affected people at Anandvan alone puts him in a unique class of great national figures who lived for the betterment of their fellow human beings. His life long struggle to unite people across the length and breadth of the country on national and Gandhian lines and to eliminate all forms of discrimination and bias truly make him a saint of our times. The footprints of Baba Amte will be permanently embedded in the sands of time and will be a guiding beacon for all those working for the common good.

In this hour of sorrow, my heart reaches out to all those associated with Baba Amte and his millions of admirers across the nation. I pay homage to a truly great son of India and pray that his departed soul rests in peace.”

At a function organized by the Ministry of Culture and Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti at Vigyan Bhawan here, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh administered the following pledge:

“I shall work for an India in which the poorest shall feel that it is their country, in whose making they have an effective voice, an India in which there shall be no high class and low class of people; an India in which all communities shall live in perfect harmony. There can be no room in such an India for the curse of untouchability, or the curse of intoxicating drinks and drugs. Women will enjoy the same rights as men. We shall be at peace with all the rest of the world. This is the India of my dreams.” M.K. GANDHI.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Smt. Ambika Soni said history has time and again shown that violence can never be countered by violence, wars never bring peace and hatred and intolerance get only multiplied and reinforced whenever confronted with counter intolerance and hatred. She said Gandhiji, a visionary that he was, showed us the way out from this vicious circle. He clearly saw the futility of violent means to resolve conflicts and realize peace. She said the declaration of October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, as International Day of Non-Violence by UN mooted by India and supported by 142 member states is a manifestation of the change of hearts. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi “the world will live in peace, only when the individuals composing it make up their minds to do so”. Smt. Ambika Soni said this message can and should be practiced by all of us at individual levels if we want this world to be a better place to live.
